FIA’s Predictive Road-Safety Platform Wins Barcelona’s Mobility Award

Representatives receive the Mobility Award at the World Smart City Awards 2026 ceremony.

The FIA has won the Mobility Award at the World Smart City Awards 2026 for a platform that tests road risks before authorities change an intersection. The recognition was announced on November 5 following the Barcelona event.

FIA Risk-Based Road Scores uses Roadscor technology to create digital versions of real junctions. Traffic patterns, road geometry and movement data feed simulations of thousands of interactions, including near misses that may never appear in historical crash records.

With initial support from EIT Urban Mobility, the programme was piloted in Rome in 2025 alongside the Automobile Club d’Italia and Roma Capitale. The FIA reports that the assessment identified a redesign with the potential to reduce collisions by up to 70%. That figure is a projected benefit of the proposed changes, not a measured reduction in crashes after construction.

The award underlines a practical role for digital twins in transport planning: comparing safety options before committing to street works. Wider adoption will still depend on local data, validation and decisions by the authorities responsible for each road network.
