Infineon has introduced LinearFET, a MOSFET technology aimed at the power-distribution systems used in electric and software-defined vehicles. Announced on October 27, it addresses several electrical-design problems that become more important as conventional fuse boxes give way to electronically controlled networks.
The company identifies three priorities: sharing current predictably between parallel devices, controlling the initial surge when capacitors charge, and withstanding short-circuit events. Handling more of these functions within the power device could reduce the additional circuitry and oversized components otherwise needed around it.
Potential applications include power-distribution units, battery disconnect switches, solid-state fuses and zonal electrical architectures. These systems control where power flows within the vehicle, making them an important counterpart to the computers and data networks associated with software-defined cars.
Infineon says products using the technology are available. Its announcement describes a component-level launch, rather than a named vehicle programme or a quantified improvement in driving range. The practical benefits will depend on how manufacturers integrate and validate the devices within their complete electrical systems.
